July 27, 2016 – Before the day ends, some lucky player of Powerball could win $478 million.
The drawing, which is set on 11pm ET on Saturday, is not just the 5th largest jackpot Powerball prize in the history of the game – it is also the 8th largest lottery prize ever offered in the U.S. history.
The winner (or winners) can choose an option of taking the prize of $478 million spread out over thirty years or opt for a lump sum payment of around $330.6 million before federal taxes.
Most winners, such as a couple in Florida that claimed their portion of the largest Powerball prize ever of $1.58 billion on February, go for the latter option.
According to the reports this week, the jackpot for Powerball game has rolled over twenty three times since it was reset to its base sum of $40 million for May 11 drawing.
Powerball lottery tickets (which sell for $2 per piece) can be bought everywhere the game is played. That means it can be bought in 44 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands.
According to Powerball, the odds of buying the winning Powerball lottery ticket are 1 in 292 million.
