Reddit user locolukas decided he didn’t want to deal with the upkeep of his lawn anymore, so he planted a vegetable garden instead.
This is his front yard seen from the street.
He started by making 8 6′x4′ raised beds with 1″x10″x10′ reclaimed redwood barn siding.
He filled the beds with free compost from the city.
Almost all of his plants grew from seeds. The seeds started sprouting quickly.
He made an irrigation system.
The center blocks were filled with compost too. They keep the wood chips off the sidewalk and will be used to create a honeybee sanctuary with lavender, rosemary, thyme, and basil.
Argula came first.
There’s also peas…
And more peas!
He shares his vegetables with the neighbors.
He also grows green onions…
and Romano musica beans.
And there’s peppers…
and squash blossoms.
There’s flowers to attract butterflies and bees.
There’s an herb garden.
The view from the roof.
For those that worried about the Home Owners’ Association or bringing down the neighbors property value, here is a side by side of his property line with the neighbor to his east.
Here’s his neighbors’s house on the west.
The neighbors’ house is his next project.
This man did a fantastic job! I’m sure he’s eats much healthier as a result. This makes way more sense than mowing, weeding, and watering a lawn! If you think this is a good idea, share it with others.
