The country’s top 20 burglary hotspot postcodes have been revealed based on where people make the most claims on their home insurance after a break-in.

A district in Manchester is the worst place in the country for break-ins – and 12 London postcodes dominate the list, research has shown.

The figures were collated by Money Supermarket, which analysed 3.1million home insurance quotes submitted to the price comparison website over the course of a year.

According to the insurance claim figures, the M21 postcode in the Chorlton-cum-Hardy and Barlow Moor areas of south Manchester is hit harder than anywhere else in the country, with an average of 45.2 claims per 1,000 people.

Following closely in second place is the SE24 postcode in London’s Herne Hill and Tulse Hill – with an average of 41.8 claims – and Muswell Hill in N10 chalked up 40.9.

Researchers looked at areas where the most people reported having made previous claims for burglary, per thousand people.

Kevin Pratt, from Money Supermarket, said: ‘While the M21 postal district in Manchester is the country’s most notorious burglary claim hotspot, it is London that dominates the top 20 rankings.

‘But just because somewhere is named a claim hotspot, it doesn’t actually mean the area in question is not a nice place to live.

‘Thieves often target areas with wealthy residents and desirable properties where the rewards are potentially greater or quieter areas where they think there is less risk of being caught red-handed.’
