They say you’re never too old to fall in love and that good things come to those who wait. And both of those were true for a couple who have finally become man and wife – aged 97 and 90.
Between them Iris and Sid Ratcliffe may have 187 years on the clock but age has proved no barrier for them sealing their love.
Both widowed, the couple’s romance began in 2001.
Since then the pair’s romance has blossomed and after years of Sid trying to cajole Iris into letting him put a ring on her finger, she finally agreed six weeks ago.
There were tears and laughter in abundance during a beautiful ceremony at Wolverhampton Register Office yesterday, where friends and family delighted in Sid and Iris’ long overdue day.
The bride said she it was never too late to get married, even at 90.
“It’s been a beautiful day,” the Walsall-born former secretary said. “I met him at a bus stop and he swept me off my feet. It’s definitely never too late – it’s love.”
Cheeky Sid asked for the registrar to speak up during the service and said ‘yes I certainly do’ when asked if he would agree to marry Iris. Afterwards the former Chubb tool room supervisor from Bilston said: “It’s been a lovely day. We’re very happy.”
The couple, from Compton in Wolverhampton, planned to celebrate their marriage with a small gathering back at their bungalow.
The couple are keen travellers and have been to Majorca and New York together among their trips – the latter for Sid’s 90th birthday. They love watching snooker and the soaps on TV.
Iris’ daughter Pam said: “Everyone’s just so happy for them. It’s a lovely story.”
