Instead of tea I got a mouth of bacon!’: TGI Friday’s staff ‘tricked devout Muslim woman into tasting PORK after cramming bits of it in her drink straw’
Nicole Queen, a devout Muslim convert, went to a TGI Friday’s eatery in Texas this week to have lunch with a friend – only to discover what she claims to be bits of bacon deliberately stuffed inside her drink straw.
Queen, 32, a professional photographer and activist in the American Muslim community, took to her Facebook page to express her outrage at the stunt allegedly pulled off by a server who was apparently unhappy with her earlier request to leave bacon strips off the meal she had ordered.
‘Whether your Muslim, Christian, or Jewish,’ Queen wrote in a lengthy post about the incident, ‘don’t ever just accept something like this and say nothing. They put bacon in the wrong girls
Queen’s wrath: Nicole Queen, a ‘party girl’ turned devout Muslim convert, was outraged to discover what she described as bacon bits stuffed into a straw in her TGI Friday’s iced tea
According to Queen, she and a friend ducked into the TGI Friday’s eatery at Firewheel Town Center in Garland Tuesday to grab a quick salad.
The woman wrote that their server gave them a chilly reception, leading Queen and her companion to believe ‘he did not want us at his table.’
Speaking to the station WFAA, Queen said the waiter appeared less than thrilled when she sent back a Cobb salad because it had morsels of bacon in it.
‘Me and my friends were like, “Let’s be extra nice to him, because maybe he’s not comfortable with us because we’re Muslim,”’ Queen recalled.
When it came time to pay for the meal, a different server brought Queen the check and offered to refill her cup of iced tea to-go.
The waitress’ gesture struck Queen as slightly odd since she had never gotten a refill to-go after dining in, but she gratefully accepted the foam cup with a straw already inserted into the lid, thinking that the staffer was trying to make up for her colleague’s surly demeanor.
‘I got in the car and took off the top wrap and took a sip,’ Queen wrote on her Facebook page. ‘Instead of tea I got a mouth of BACON!!!’
Queen, who converted to Islam six years after spending her teens and 20s as a self-described ‘party girl,’ instantly recognized the porky flavor and marched back into the eatery to confront the wait staff.
‘I asked for the manager and told him what happened and his reply was just deny deny deny,’ she wrote later.
According to Queen, the manager claimed that the servers have no access to the kitchen, and the bacon specks must have gotten into the cup by accident – an assertion she has dismissed because someone had placed half of the wrapper back on the straw before handing it to her.
Queen then handed the cup to the manager and vowed never to patronize the restaurant chain again after he had offered to replace her tainted drink.
On Wednesday, after the story was picked up by the blog The Muslim Voice, TGI Friday’s posted a message on its Facebook page that read: ‘We want everyone to have a great time at Fridays – we don’t tolerate discrimination in any form.
‘We launched an investigation around what happened yesterday and will take appropriate actions and update as more information is available.’
Queen, who is married to a Jordanian national and has a baby son, said that the staffers at the eatery made her feel like a minority for the first time in her life.
Wednesday night, the outspoken activist told WFAA that a TGI Friday’s executive called her to apologize for her treatment at the Garland eatery.
She has no intention of filing a lawsuit but hopes that the fast food chain would offer its employees sensitivity training.
