A mother whose best friend died in a car crash after her husband had been told he had terminal cancer has taken on the couple’s orphaned children.
Jane Plume quit her job to become a carer for widower Shaun Hibberd, and sons Lewis and Ashton, after PA Gina was killed in the accident on her way to work.
When Mr Hibberd died of testicular cancer two years later, she did ‘one last favour’ to her old friend by taking on the care of the boys, aged 14 and seven.
To avoid uprooting the youngsters, the mother of three moved in with two of her children to the Hibberd family home in Loughborough, Leicestershire.
‘The kids were already close because Gina and I were friends for so long,’ the 41-year-old said. ‘I didn’t think twice about taking them on.’
The single mother left son Marco, 19, living at her house when she moved with daughters Millie, 17, and Annie-Mae, seven, after Mr Hibberd’s death in November last year.
‘It was devastating when Shaun asked me to take care of them but everyone knew that would be the best thing,’ she added.
