TAMPA (FOX 13) -Tampa police have made an arrest in a disturbing case of animal cruelty.
Elliot Huggins is accused of killing the family dog, and then cutting it up for food.
Police say a family member notified police of what Huggins was doing. Investigators say he strangled the family’s dog, and then cut it into quarters and removed the head.
Huggins then allegedly put the dog’s remains in the freezer. When officers arrived, they found Huggins cooking the dog’s ribs in a pot on the stove.
He has been charged with animal cruelty.
Animal control has removed the dog’s remains from the home.
What happened to the dog has left a community shocked and disgusted.
“My God, that’s not my neighbor, that’s somebody else. It had to be somebody else,” said Neighbor Frances Morris.
Tampa police officers arrested 25-year-old Elliot Huggins for animal cruelty. They said he killed his family’s dog and then cut her up for food.
“He admitted to killing the dog he admitted to how he killed the dog, and he said that he was killing the dog because he was mad at it,” said Andrea Davis with the Tampa Police Department.
The family told police Huggins has had some problems ever since doing drugs five years ago. Frances Morris noticed it too. She described his demeanor as he was arrested.
“They were asking him what was going on through his mind. He just stood up there and smiled at the police,” said Morris.
News of the arrest of Huggins hit John Pisacane hard. He gave the dog to the family six months ago when his own dog had puppies.
“I got sick to my stomach and I just couldn’t believe it,” he said. “When he first got it, it’s like almost holding it like a baby, and I figured he was a good guy that would take care of the dog. But apparently not. You never know when, what could happen,” Pisacane said.
