Beards Keep You Young, Healthy & Handsome, Says Science

Gentlemen, they’re not just for hipsters and the homeless any more. While both dead sexy and totally awesome, beards are also a boon to your overall health. Researchers discovered that men with beards and moustaches actually enjoy numerous benefits including, but not limited to, instant handsomeness.

A study from the University of Southern Queensland, published in the Radiation Protection Dosimetry journal, found that beards block 90 to 95 percent of UV rays, thereby slowing the aging process and reducing the risk of skin cancer. Got asthma? Pollens and dust simply get stuck in that lustrous facial hair. Additionally, all that hair retains moisture and protects against the wind, keeping you looking young and fresh-faced. What’s more, shaving is usually the cause of ingrown hairs and bacterial infections that lead to acne.

Have you tossed your razor in the trash yet?

To conduct the study, researchers left bearded mannequins, along with less attractive, follically-challenged ones, in the blistering sun of the Australian outback and then compared the amount of radiation absorbed by each.

But don’t forget to take care of those blessed follicles; beards can also spread infection if not properly cared for and make consumption of certain foods (e.g. cheeseburgers, corn on the cob, falafel sandwiches—anything with hummus actually, bagel ‘n’ schmear, syrupy pancakes) rather laborious. Fuzzy-faced men would be wise to take advantage of beard wash and beard oil, essential tools for looking and feeling your beardy best.

i really want to have beard. but as of now, it is starting but very slowly. can i ask some tips to make it grow faster and healthier? thanks

    • Ali

The best looking beards are the ones that grow naturally (in my opinion). Just be patient and let it grown. Wash the beard regularly, and when you do, apply oil. Olive oil is probably the best with loads of benefits!

(P.S one the best things about olive oil is that it doesn’t smell and also is really effective!)

  • Fatimah

Wow, I love it when science discovers these things centuries after Islam has recommended them. Keeping a beard was a practice of Prophet Muhammad (may peace be upon him) and his advice to every muslim man was to keep one. Praise be to Allah, The Most Merciful.

    • zee

and so another shred of evidence that science is catching up what the Quran preached centuries ago…..

    • raj

yes we muslims should feel proud about our beards now.
      sunnah is the best way

    • Adam

Dont bring religion and science together

      • Babar

        But why?

    • Cranker

So is this why muslim women wear a bag over head and body? To look more attractive, avoid pollen and avoid UV radiation?

      • Lynexeye

NOO! Muslim women cover their body from the perverts like you as they feel safe that way. Unlike your fantasy girls in G-strings and naked. Try to mind your own business please.

      • Babar

What have Western women achieved by striping off their clothes?? Tell me what was the dress code of European women a few decades ago?

    • iAm Karma

Shatap “Fatty More” how does this relates to islam phoool… Keeping beards has been ever practised even before islam…
So what the hell are you talking about? Jews keeps beards, Early Christians do… Even baal worshipers do… So how does this relates to islam…. Must you tie everything to religion?

      • Lynexeye

Should you must bark at a simple comment, just because it’s from a Muslim person. She simply meant by relating beard with Islam because Muslims are encouraged do have it and they are outnumbered in practicing it. Throw your shitty views at someone else. Thanks

      • Babar

Firstly, you need to learn how to behave and talk to others.
Secondly, the religion of all the Prophets including Abraham (Peace Be Upon Him), Moses(Peace Be Upon Him) and Jesus (Peace be Upon Him) was Islam. This is how it relates to Islam !

    • @Fatimah, agreed with your comments. it is very nice 🙂

  • Khalida

yes that’s right, there are many of his (PBUH) practices that have been scientifically proven beneficial to human being emotionally and physically, God is The Greatest

    • Saad

In that case you should follow the lifestyle of those who have lived more than a century or even a century since they were physically more sound!

  • Wolf

Fatimah; Did Muhammad state the reasons for keeping a beard to be those named above in this article? If not, your comment is irrelevant.

  • Sane

The word of God is true so is the sayings of prophets. Truth shall always come out against falsehood. There’s a reason and logic behind every action and saying of our prophets. Time only proves it right.

Great article, but the main catch is how you keep it, the beard should not be very long as it is much harder to keep it clean and tidy and neither it should be so short that it cant even protect you from the UV rays. Grow it nicely, keep it clean and trim your moustache, cause its not healthy at all to have hairs in mouth. Our prophet indeed was right even in the smallest of things. SubhanAllah

  • JustJam

My friends tell me that a beard doesn’t really suite me because I’m 5’4. I look better if I have a young fresh face even though I’m in my 20s now. I don’t think a beard would suite me either since I would end up looking like a dwarf…

    • Cristofer J Levandoski

since when are dwarves uncool? keep in mind you could also end up looking like a shorter viking. they were generally your height.

      • MNOC

No most vikings were atleast 6ft not 5ft4 haha so undereducated.

        • Cou

          christofer said ‘ like a SHORTER viking’…..

          • MNOC

But he said that vikings were generally his height which if 5ft4 so what I said was correct.

  • guymacher

Beards really make Muslim terrorists look young.

    • Joseph

What does a beard have to do with terrorism? You’re clearly the type that always respond with ridiculous comments. And talking about Islam, the Koran states that a beard is very important for your health. If you’re going to critisize, first learn something about it ….

      • guymacher

I said “Muslim” terrorists. | didn’t say clean shaven Mormom terrorisst, did I? Read the Koran chapter 9. Also, Koran 18:86 says the sun sets in a muddy pool. So science isn’t Mohameddanism’s strong suit.

        • mohammed azharuddin

hey brother is muslims with the beared are terrorist for you???
no you are wrong first look at the face of beloved jesus he has beared, can you called jesus as same, astagfirullah,

          • guymacher

It’s the doctrine, stupid. We love Jesus because He loves everyone, He heals, He forgives, He saves
            Mohamed was a psychopath pervert.

          • bewildered

Sadly ppl who claim to pin point look like sheer extremists themselves lol. Hail West! and its tolerance!.

        • Samar

stupid idiot increase ur knowledge and understanding. if u dont understand quran then stop barking here. stop giving ur own meaning to quran. Quran told about world before people has found if u understand the meaning of that verse then bark here cause it clearly shows u dont know anything about quran. Big bang theory, child birth , sun revolving, etc. these were said 1400 years ago n only a stupid like u can believe in bible who has scientific errors and claiming that person is a god who was jus a man.

          • guymacher

Why do mohameddans believe reading the koran will favorably impress a rational mind? I read it! I think it records the doctrine of Satan! I read Mein Kampf, too. I think it is evil, though not as evil as the koran.
In koran 18:86 it claims the sun sets in a muddy pool. That’s mohameddan science!

  • thebearded1

I refer so many to this splendid article and am very grateful to the University of Queensland for telling the truth about the Beard’s many benefits. I am a beard advocate of 27 years now, and have been telling others about the beard’s importance to men all this time without such comprehensive analysis. You beat down the insanity from the University of New South Wales which I believe to this day was a bought and sold lie about beards being germ factories, sponsored by the razor companies, whose sales are still in world-wide free-fall. Proof from the tainted source: “The University of New South Wales have some bad news for beard owners and some great news for Gillette. …”. I’ve been discrediting their lack of reason and total disregard for science ever since. Unfortunately, the rags that call themselves newspapers and some of the blogs out there continue to tout this foolishness. This speaks to something far sinister: beard discrimination, which thankfully is being successfully beaten back, especially in courts. As bizarre as it seems, many of us have been denied raises, employment, entry into associations, just because the beard was unwelcome. Some still want to live in the last millennia’s playbook of emasculation, bias and ostracizing. We won’t allow that ever again.

  • Cou

why is this even a conversation piece….let alone the anger etc it provokes! There is less about men who shave their heads or grow their head hair……so childish; each to their own and allow others the same!
